I’ve lived in Colorado my entire life…yes I’m one of the few Natives still here and we do take those bumper stickers seriously.  With the Summer travel season upon us, I wanted to share with you my top 5 favorite outdoor spots to explore this time of year.

#1  Estes Park - Trail Ridge Road is one of the most iconic drives in the state, however it isn’t open to vehicles year round.  Due to tremendous snow fall, Trail Ridge Road can close in October/November and might not open again until May/June.  Estes Park is a few degrees cooler than the Metro Area, so it makes your hiking and biking adventures more comfortable.  Shopping on Moraine and Elkhart Avenues are a real treat.  You will not find any chain stores, just locally owned establishments offering unique arts, crafts, products as well as tasty treats and drinks to refresh yourself.  If you really want to be adventurous you will find many opportunities to fish and embark on 4 Wheel Tours.  You don’t have to be a Stephen King fan to know about the Stanley Hotel.  This hotel opened on July 4, 1909, by Freeman Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame.  Make a reservation for dinner, take a tour or splurge and book a room for the night.

#2  Grand Junction - Due to the unique climate in Mesa County, a great deal of our states’ produce is grown in Grand Junction.   The many vineyards, farms and orchards offer opportunities to shop at wineries and farmers markets.  Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests offer beautiful free or low cost camping options so you can get out there and explore on foot, horse or 4 wheels.

#3 Breckenridge - There is so much to do in “Breck” that during the summer season you will not even miss your skis.  Take the family to the Summer Fun Park at Peak 8 to play mini golf, zoom down the alpine slide, check out the bounce house, maze, climbing wall and rope course.  There are tons of hiking trails or you can rent bikes to tour around on as well.  Take a leisurely stroll along the Blue River which runs parallel to main street where you will find all sorts of fun local eateries and shops.

#4  Glenwood Springs - If you are coming from the East on I-70 to get to Glenwood, the drive there is as spectacular as the destination.  Once you get to Glenwood Springs you will be overwhelmed by the options of activities.  You can zip line, play putt putt golf or “regulation” golf, go rafting or soak away your cares in the hot springs pool or vapor caves.

#5  Colorado Springs - A short drive south from Denver will bring you to Colorado Springs and with all the things to explore you could go for the day, a long weekend or even a week long vacation.  The Garden of the Gods is one of the most unique natural settings for a hike, picnic, or wedding.  Treat yourself at The Broadmoor with a round of golf, dinner or a nights stay.  Kids from 1 to 101 always enjoy an outing at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo with up close encounters with the animals and fun rides.  Three hours of your time will be well spent riding the Pikes Peak Cog Railway and you will learn what it has to do with a mattress.  Take advantage of the various tours at the Air Force Academy or you can hike the B-52 Loop.

This list could really go on an on.  I’d love to hear about some of your favorite places.
