The house that burritos built is back on the market.
Constructed in 2001, the home of Chipotle Mexican Grill founder, Steve Ells is truly a serene, walled oasis on a ⅓-acre lot in Denver’s historic Country Club neighborhood.

“What makes it so special is the architecture. It’s like nothing else,” said Ian Wolfe a LIV Sotheby’s International Realty listing agent. The Wolfe Group specializes in high-end properties. “This home is at the level of a home you’d see in Los Angeles. There is truly nothing like this in Denver,” he added.
The posh four-bedroom and five bathroom property was designed by Thomas Briner. It overlooks the Denver Country Club golf course and is minutes away from the city center. “But when you are on the property, you feel completely isolated,” Wolfe said.
The lines between the interior and heavily landscaped exterior are blurred by massive imported windows that open to the private courtyard and heated saltwater swimming pool. Also, the outdoor kitchen features a pizza oven and charcoal grill.
According to Wolfe, Ells—a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and a former sous chef at Jeremiah Tower’s Stars—chose a charcoal grill because he was very particular with how and where he cooked.
This also explains the commercial kitchen suite which features precision cooking hobs and ovens, and stainless steel countertops. These industrial elements are softened with hints of rustic influence including top-of-the line maple cabinetry, and a slab-cut wooden breakfast bar.
“These materials were the absolute best at the time the house was built,” Wolfe said. “He paid premium prices for everything. No corner was cut.”
A library, theater and an attached three-car indoor garage are included in this 5,321-square-foot home. To top that off, the house features high ceilings and large walls that would somewhat be perfect for an art gallery.
In 2008, Ells sold the home for $3.5 million and as of now, it is priced at $3.8 million. Wolfe says that the request is far too low for replacement costs. On the contrary, Ells spent $3.5 million building the house, excluding the $1.8 million to $2 million it would cost to acquire a lot the size of 100 S. Marion Street Parkwayin Denver—if you could find it in the city.
“This isn’t construction like the house next door,” Wolfe said, “or like any other house in Denver.”
