Bringing Home A Spring Chicken

Well it's that time of year!  Chicks are in at the farm and ranch stores.  Silkies are by far my favorite breed, but the Brown Leghorns are phenomenal egg layers.  There are a lot of contests for free chicken coops right now, and these cute fuzzy birds sure are hard to turn down if you have any small children.

Keep in mind the importance of checking with your neighborhood association or restrictive covenants, if any, before bringing chickens home.  Rural neighborhoods and homes outside of city limits tend to be more accommodating, but it's best to do your homework first.  Often times, neighborhoods will allow for hens but not roosters.  You aren't always guaranteed what gender you're getting at the store, so this could be challenging.  Miss Bowdach, a black Silkie, turned out to be a rooster for us, so now he's Mr. Bowdach.  Fortunately, roosters were allowed.

Happy Spring!
