Carbon monoxide, the odorless silent killer, its a colorless gas that has been known to wipe out entire families as they sleep. This is a serious public health concern, as more than 10,000 people are poisoned by carbon monoxide each year and over 500 people in the US die from it annually.
Winter leaves unsuspecting homeowners more susceptible with windows and doors remaining closed to keep warm. Fortunately, a carbon monoxide detector can protect homeowners and their families for around $50.
Provided you are lucky enough and don't die from exposure to carbon monoxide, prolonged exposure can lead to brain damage, memory loss, heart complications and a number of permanent health problems.
Colorado has a law, House Bill 09-1091, This law requires homeowners and owners of rental property to install carbon monoxide alarms within 15 feet of thebedrooms (or other room lawfully used for sleeping purposes) in every home that is heated with fossil fuel, has a fuel-fired appliance, has a fireplace, or has an attached garage. This law applies to both single family homes and multi-family homes. However, it does not apply to commercial buildings.
Stay safe this holiday season, test your carbon monoxide detectors regularly. If you have an older home and don't have carbon monoxide detectors you can find them at you local hardware store, they are available as hard wired units and plug in modules as well.
