Why Build Green?
“Sustainability”: the simple notion that the way of life we choose must not lead to circumstances that prevent that way of life from continuing.Thinking about “building green”? Consider all the facts. Here are just a few to get you started.
#1 Nontoxic. We need to sustain a healthy indoor and outdoor environment. Providing a healthy indoor environment while doing nothing to harm the outdoor environment.
#2 Long Lasting. Natural resources in the form of building materials, fuels, tools, and ingenuity. The longer the building lasts the longer the time before the environment is asked to give up those resources again.
#3 Stay Put. It takes a long time to cultivate healthy soil to grow good food. Nurture trees and other plants that can act as part of the homes cooling strategy. A “green” home needs to be so beautiful you would have a hard time ever leaving it.
#4 Minimize Impact. Use replenishable materials that create a minimum impact of ecological destruction through their use. Be thoughtful when considering design, recycle, reuse, refurbish, re-design.
#5 Conserving Resources. Building the house is just the first step of “going green”. Now people must live in it. Consider resource efficiency when choosing such things as cooling, heating, water and electricity.
In the end, when thinking about building green, see how a building will best merge with your own style, mode of survival, and how to create the most beneficial impact on your environment, now and for many years to come.
