5 Decor Ideas To Make An Additional Living Space Outdoors

Living in the city has some amazing aspects to it.  Bright lights, tons of stuff to do and see, and great home styles and designs.  One draw back, however, can be your outdoor space.  Patios tend to be much smaller and available green space is almost non-existent.

A small patio, balcony, or terrace is an added living area when designed well. This is simpler when the space is ample enough, but what if it is challenging to use? Here are some helpful tips when decorating small exteriors:

1. Keep it simple. Determining the use of your patio will help guide design choices. Will it be a place to lounge while watching the setting sun? Is it to be used as an alternative dining area? By answering these types of questions, you can narrow furniture selections. Often, keeping the design clean and simple offers spaciousness and comfort.

2. Have a lighting plan. Night illumination outdoors (like indoors) is particularly important in creating a mood and making a space inviting. Even the smallest balcony benefits from a string of lights or candles in lanterns. These offer an essence of comfort and coziness that makes up for limited space.  Be sure to use outdoor lights only and place wires where they cannot be chewed thru by animals.  Stay away from colored lights as that will make a tacky holiday feel over a romantic, classy feel. Be sure to check the end of Holiday season for strings of white lights, or patio decor.  The lights as we all know don't last forever but investing in sale items will eliminate stress should part of a strand go out right before company coming over. 3. Embellish with color pop. Outdoor living areas are where one can be bolder with color choice and style. Have fun with accessories like pillows and rugs. Citrus palettes and vibrant blues are summer time favorites that connote the joy of vacation. Any small outdoor space that can do that is successful design.  Watch for sales at fabric stores at the end of a season for fabrics, flower pots, colored class jars.  Purchasing out door fabric remnants at discount is a great way to save and give your weathered outdoor cushions a new look. 4. Lighten up with neutrals. If bright colors aren’t your thing, going towards neutrals  like whites and beige can work as well. Classically, these hues open up a space, making it seemingly larger. Go a step further and add one bright pop of color with a flower pot or vase, or keep that neutral and add some amazing variety of flowers.

5. Have a focal point. Like in interior design, having a focal point that inspires or engages goes far. Why not have a piece of art outdoors? A fire pit or striking plant can also do the trick. Such pieces take the emphasis off of size and places it on style. Easy DIY fence art can turn that shared fence into a focal point of design and decor. Yard sales, flea markets and even, shhhhhh ...."DUMPSTERS", can have some fantastic items you can use to re purpose at little or no cost, to create that amazing focal point. Taking these elements into consideration will stylize and make the most of your outdoor patio design. CHEERS!
