Yesterday was the Pro-Am at Cherry Hills. What a wonderful event it is for the metro area to host. The BMW is the top 70 golfers in the world in FedEx points. The Pro-Am is an event where 1 pro is paired with 3 amateurs. Watching the players interact with the amateurs and the spectators throughout the day gave me a good feel for some of the players. I was particularly impressed with some of the foreign players out there. The South African and Australian players were the friendliest and most personable among the players out there. They would go out of their way to visit or sign a autograph for all that wanted them. Charl Schwartzel from South Africa and Stuart Appleby from Australia both asked a group of youngsters to come under the ropes to them to sign whatever these kids had between their tee shot and their 3 amateurs tee shots. Jason Day from Australia looked like he enjoyed him self and was very social with all players and spectators and he always had a smile on his face.
On the other side of things were Bubba Watson USA who didn't sign anything or acknowledge the spectators. Jimmy Walker USA who looked like he didn't want to be there. There were many USA players that were accommodating and friendly to the crowd. Hunter Mahan, Jordan Spieth, and Matt Kuchar all seemed to enjoy the atmosphere out there at Cherry Hills. Phil Mickelson was a crowd favorite. he doesn't sign autographs till after the round, but then will spend 1-2 hours signing autographs for every last person there. He not only signs for everyone, he looks each person in the eye and talks to them while he is signing. Class guy Phil is, some of the other USA golfers could learn a thing or two from him.
All in all Cherry Hill CC and the metro area have done a great job putting this event together. Hope we can get other pro golf events to the state in the near future.
